SATELLITE OF TAO: GOODBYE TIROL!

Bad news, Peoples!

Today I bring you a rather tragic edition of my on again/off again feature celebrating all things MST3K.

I rarely find myself writing about the glory that is this incomparable program with so heavy a heart, for you see friends--Tirol9's YouTube Channel has been pulled for copyright violations.

Perhaps I should explain in depth:

Yesterday my MST3K-themed TR Daily List was published, and thus I was in the mood for a bit of MSTie goodness. I proceeded forthwith to my Youtube account, where I have (or had) literally dozens of eps saved in playlists. As I have mentioned in the past, early in my online career, before becoming so wildly popular and successful (and delusionalXD), I spent the majority of my time watching MST3K on Youtube. Not only did I get to recapture treasured memories of my dissolute youth, I also got a chance to catch up on the Sci-Fi Channel seasons. SFC wasn't available in my area back in 1997, and I never had the chance to make up for the time I subsequently lost...Until now.

This miracle is largely due to the wonderful folks at the Digital Archive Project (originally known as the MST3K Digital Archive Project) . These diehard MSTies have put uncounted hours and incredible effort into locating, cataloguing, restoring, and downloading as many MST3K episodes as possible: From the pre-Comedy Channel KTMA shows, all the way to the end of the SFC run. They started in 2001, just after SFC had canceled the show, but while they were still showing it in rerun. Oddly enough, the DAP was started for exactly the OPPOSITE of what I uesd them for: See, SFC didn't have the rights to any of the Comedy Central shows, so MSTies who didn't get into the show until it's last 3 seasons were denied ANY exposure to the first 7! They started out simply doing what every episode suggests at the end--that is: "Circulating The Tapes", and eventually started transferring and uploading the shows, many of which would then end up on Youtube, which brings us to Tirol9.

I don't know him or her, we've never met or corresponded. All I know is of all the users who took the time and effort to upload MST3K for the benefit of MSTies the world over,Tirol was the most dependable and prolific. He had scores of eps uploaded, the sound and picture quality was always excellent, the 9 to 10 minute chunks the shows had to be cut into for uploading were always expertly edited--never cut mid-sentence, and never more that a second or two at most would be lost between chapters. We, the MSTies of the Youtube communtity, honored and apreciated his/her efforts, and will miss him dearly.

For you see, as always, if one person on Earth is having a good time there's another wondering why they're not making money off him. NBC/Universal, who apparently hate joy and spit upon all that is good and pleasant (a bit much? I don't think so) threw a shit fit. Already they had successfully blocked certain eps from being downloaded--or made others only downloadable if you cut out the intros--or had episodes blocked if anyone in the comments says the name of the movie (seriously, try to find Gamera on Youtube, and see what happens)

In poor Tirol's case--they managed to get his entire Channel pulled. Not only does this mean I lost about 75% of the episodes I had saved, but I also lost nearly ALL of my Joel episodes! I've got maybe 3 left...What would he say about such a cruel injustice?

Indeed!

Yeah, sure...They own the copyrights, they can do what they want...But was having a few episodes of a show that's been off the air for a decade available for the perusal of fans really hurting anything? Is it any different essentially from recording a program on DVR or tape and sharing it with others? Only the scale is different. Furthermore, no one's making a profit here, and I seriously doubt if having the shows on Youtube is discouraging anyone from buying the DVDs--there's no comparison as far as picture and sound quality, no clicking the next part every 10 minutes, and Youtube won't get you special features and other extras.

In other, more succinct terms:

Fuck you, NBC/Universal.

Seriously, Fuck you in the ear.

We'll miss you, Tirol9:

This is a musical tribute and send-off I found. I very much wanted to find a clip of "Clown In The Sky", but my search proved fruitless (and even though they had nothing to do with it, I'm gonna go ahead and blame NBC/Universal for this, too). Fortunately, I found this utterly sublime remix of every MST3K Theme throughout the show's entire history.

If you're anything like me, you'll need to watch it with a box of Kleenex.

KEEP CIRCULATING THE TAPES!!!

WHILE DA BOSS IS OUT... A LITTLE NERD NEWS

Greetings, Turkey-Stuffed Ingrates My Friends!

So, not too many of you folks showed up to watch MST3K's Night of the Blood Beast (Turkey Day Edition) with me last night...That's OK....I see how it is....

Alright, I was gonna drag that weak jest out for awhile, but fuck it--it ain't that funny and I'm not in the least mad. It's totally cool--I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I'm thankful for all my marvelous contributors and discerning readers. Mazel Tov!

Right, then, as I said yesterday, since Rob is taking a well-deserved Turkey Day hiatus, TTOS will be filling the Fanfic void, soon as Abraxas gets here...

I also just saw something definitely nerd-newsworthy on Yahoo, and since Mr. Bricken isn't there for me to send it to (and Colleen hasn't beaten me to it) I see it as my responsibility, as a proud member of the made-up, self-appointed Nerd Press to report it to the peoples:

Dig This:

Now I've never played a Guitar Hero game and have no serious plans to do so in the future: But this story caught my attention as it appealed to my long-running distaste for Axl Rose-- the sweaty, obnoxious, wife-smacking mediocre-at-best lead singer of Guns 'N Roses.

The short version is Mr. Rose is suing Activision, makers of GH, to the tune of 20 million clams. Why? Because apparently he had an agreement with Activision that stated he would only allow them to use his song "Welcome To The Jungle" on GH3 if they promised to feature no songs by Velvet Revolver, current employers of the infinitely more talented guitarist who carried Rose for years: Slash.

It seems, for reasons that I've yet to care enough to uncover, that the two are now blood enemies.

Well, Activision not only features tunes by Slash and his new bandmates on GH3, they put him on the box cover, made him unofficial spokesman for the game, and even made him a playable Avatar in the game.

Axl was not pleased.

Now, why he's waited all this time to file this suit (GH3 was released three years ago!) is anyone's guess: My completely biased, unproffesional, subjesctive assessment is that Mr. Rose is a douchenozzle who hates joy and spits on all that is talented and good--anybody got any other ideas?

I'm not usually one to encourage judging a book by it's cover...But sometimes the cover tells you an awful lot about what's in that book. I'ma show you pics of the two men in question--you tell me which one's the douche:

Here's Axl...

(shudder)

Now here's Slash...

I'd say the boobs pictures speak for themselves. Now, the fair-minded among you might call this a smear campaign and complain how I picked the worst possible pic of Axl and the best possible pic of Slash, to which I resoundingly retort: So?

And I didn't just pick the above image of Slash because he happened to be posing with his smokin' hot wife, Perla Hudson (look around you--you really think I need an excuse to post pics of hot women?). I'm just of the opinion that her presence helps illustrate my point that Slash rocks your face off, and Axl is a bitter, cornrowed douche.

Don't you all feel informed? ;)

The Fall of Jacen Solo

Hello my Children. It has been a while since Den Mother Colleen has addressed you all. Well beware a rant is brewing.

Now I know that the majority of people here, if not all, could care less about Jacen Solo...or even know who he is. But I do. I am a die-hard Star Wars fan...of the original trilogy anyway. However, while George Lucas systematically destroyed fans time and time again with the moronification of this franchise, the EU authors kept true to the spirit of Star Wars. They even managed to incorporate the new "canon" crap that Lucas came up with into the stories without making me want to projectile vomit. Hell, they even killed Chewie in a way that kept true to the spirit of that Wookiee...So I'm down with the EU...and fuck all you haters. That is until the Insect trilogy (forgot the actual name and I don't actually care enough to look it up) and most particularly "The Legacy of the Force" series. All you authors can kiss my ass for running with THAT story arch.

Why am I suddenly ranting about some EU character? Well on this week's TR contest I found another fan of Star Wars who was as horrified by the newest EU books as I am. I am currently in a philosophical discussion regarding the nature of the Force. Anyway, to me the ultimate betrayal is what they decided to do to my favorite EU character, the aforementioned Jacen Solo. For those who did not read the Heir to the Empire trilogy by Timothy Zahn, Jacen Solo is Han & Leia's oldest son and twin to Jaina Solo. As a kid he told stupid jokes and had an affinity with animals...and that's the Jedi, I can get them to do what I want, affinity. He was cute, he was good natured, and he was utterly awkward when dealing with his crush, Tenel Ka. He was pretty much the Jedi version of any geek teen.

And then the New Jedi Order series occurred. And that should have been a clue to all of us EU fans as to where the book series was going. Back to the Dark and Bitter days akin to the Empire Era. Basically, a race of Extra-Galactic aliens obssessed with BDSM -the type that don't have safe words- invaded the galaxy. And proceeded to wipe the floor with the New Republic. I won't get into details but the series began with the DEATH OF CHEWBACCA. Just so you know how serious these aliens are. The war also killed the youngest of Han & Leia's children, Anakin Solo.

More importantly, Jacen was captured by an agent of the Yuuzhan Vong or a double agent AT BEST, Vergere. She was once a Jedi who met this race and decided to go with them so she could learn everything possible about this new threat. This was about 50 years prior to this series and years before the Clone Wars. Whatever happened in the intervening time had seriously messed with this chick's sense of right and wrong. She permitted the torture and implantation of a slave-seed into Jacen. The result was Jacen began to influence the world brain that took over Coruscant...and he was able to develop the "Vong Sense." Meaning unlike the rest of the Jedi, he could feel the Yuuzhan Vong...but not with using the force since they were stripped of that millenia ago by an INTELLIGENT PLANET. Anyway, when the war ended Jacen was able to bridge the gap between the Vong and the denizens of the Star Wars Galaxy. But there was a price...a horrible, horrible price. Jacen took to heart WAY too much of Vergere's teachings...which were corrupted by the insanity that was the Yuuzhan Vong's way of life...which is contrary to everything a Jedi believes in. For instance, the Jedi worship life while the Yuuzhan Vong worship death.

In the proceeding trilogy and series, I watched in utter horror as Jacen was completely stripped of his compassion, his good nature, and everything that was vital to the character as I knew him from the Young Jedi Knights series. He killed, he tortured, he plotted, and he did it all because he wanted to bring order back to the Galaxy. He became Darth Caedus and Jacen Solo was lost. Mara Jade Skywalker, RIGHT BEFORE JACEN KILLED HER, put it best: You aren't another Vader, you're Palpatine. In the end, his own twin was unable to save him and in fact killed him.

The next series, the one I'm currently reading, is in part a journey by Luke to discover what wrought such a change in his nephew. He discovered a being in the Maw who can influence individuals across the galaxy. His nephew met her and apparently was stripped of the core of himself by her. I personally think that's too easy. It began 15 years prior when he was 18 and a prisoner of war...a prisoner of one who was once a Jedi.

There's a philosophical construct introduced into the Star Wars Universe during the New Jedi Order. Vergere introduced the idea that there is not a light side or dark side to the force, that it is in fact determined by the wielder him or herself. However, no Jedi can ever subscribe to this because they HAVE to believe in the Light Side. It governs their actions and more importantly, it protects those who cannot wield the force. Without such a belief in a light or dark side, force users would eventually believe that as long as the ends are just, the means do not matter. But for a Jedi, the means are utterly vital. The moment one stops caring about HOW they get results, they turn into a monster. They become Sith. I believe THIS is the fundamental difference between Jedi and Sith. Its not philosophical but practical. A Sith can care about the Galaxy but they don't have to worry about how they achieve their vision. A Jedi, on the other hand, must care or risk going against the very oath that they took -to protect and serve the Galaxy.

Jacen Solo is the result of what happens when one only contemplates the ends. The change may have been finished by the entity in the Maw, but it began with Vergere and her teachings. And thus I finish my rant and reaffirm my complete and utter geekhood.

Good Night and Good Luck

Forget Weird News: Here's FUCKED UP NEWS

Watch where you're going Suzie, or you'll be sued!
Sooo....has anyone here ever wanted to sue a FOUR YEAR OLD??? Apparently you can! Isn't that great?!?!?

So apparently some little girl accidentally ran down an old woman. The proper response is to tell the girl's parents so she can be properly punished...NOT TO SUE THE CHILD! Please read this article so you may share my rage at anyone who is enough of an asshole to sue a four year old!

I'm gonna go and hate the legal system that permits such stupidity, thank you very much.

A legally Pissed-Off Colleen, signing off!

Goodbye Project Runway...You should have stayed on Bravo.

THIS. IS. PROJECT RUNWAY.
AND YES IT IS STAGED.

Hello, my children, Colleen is here and its time for a rage filled geek rant...at a REALITY SHOW. YEAH I KNOW, WTF???

In December of 2004, Bravo did something that I never expected to happen. They made a reality show that I wanted to watch. Before this I generally loathed Reality Shows and cursed MTV for starting the craze. As Patton Oswalt once said, what will TV NOT turn into a reality show? However the concept of Project Runway captured my interest...a competition for fashion designers where they have to make outfits...sometimes out of CRAZY materials...within a day or two, show it to the cattiest judges ever -Nina Garcia & Michael Kors, and it is hosted by mother fucking HEIDI KLUM! (who is also a judge). Oh and throw in a wonderfully elegant and well-spoken gay mentor, Tim Gunn, and thus Project Runway was born. Follow me and hear of the rise and fall of this once awesome show.

The Shadow Knows who strikes Fear in the Heart of all Fashion Designers.
Nina Garcia & Michael Kors

Now we all know reality shows are at least somewhat staged...but at first it seems the Producers were content to have the drama be focused on trying to make runway appropriate attire in a very short period of time and the judges ripping them to shreds. Of course there were personality conflicts and arguments and...my personal favorite...gay men breakdowns. But in general the focus was on the competition to get to Fashion Week in NYC, which is the single most important week of runway shows in the U.S. It started with 12-15 designers, the number vacillates from season to season, and each week one contestant is offed or auf'd (Heidi Klum, after saying sorry so and so you're out, she would wish each one Auf wiedersehen). The winner gets $100,000 and other stuff like starting your own line and mentorships, cars, technology suites etc, but the $100k was the one thing that never changed in each of the seasons. More importantly the final three get the greatest exposure that a fashion designer could get in this country -being seen by celebrities and the greatest talents in the fashion world at fashion week.

The episodes were filled with scrambling to Mood to get materials for the contestants' designs, making them, being critiqued by Tim Gunn, who is hysterically descriptive, often finishing at the very last moment before the elimination runway show. The models (who are also in a competition -the model who is paired with the winner of Project Runway gets a spread in a fashion magazine & $25k) then walk the runway in the designs, the JUDGING by the awful trio of Heidi, Nina, & Michael...along with a guest judge...and finally the winner and the loser are announced. As the contestants dwindled down the challenges got harder and crazier...and finally we are down to the last three...whom Tim Gunn would visit to look at their line (the three were given $8,000 to make them), give his critiques and finally its the final days before they show at fashion week...where they are often given an extra look to show and have mental breakdowns etc. And finally they show their lines. And the winner is announced after MUCH debate by the judges. And it was good.

Sorry that took so long... Anyway, while the show was on Bravo what I described was the focus of the show. The crazy challenges and the final reward. But then it moved to Lifetime and it became obvious that the casting had more to do with personality and far less to do with actual talent. For the past three seasons I have seen less and less great fashion being made and far more interpersonal drama that I could care less about.

This present season has been the most blatantly obvious of this change of focus. The talent has been horrendously weak and the cast had so many assholes in it that I often wanted to throw a shoe at the TV. And the worst thing...the worst thing...was how obvious it was all staged and how much they wanted to fuck with the viewers. If any of you bloggers have read my prior Project Runway Rants, you will know that I have been rooting with all of my soul for the much maligned Michael Costello...who was inexplicably hated by the majority of the cast. From the moment he won a challenge it was like everyone decided he was shit and needed to be gone. This was probably stemmed from the jealousy of the detrimental duo Ivy & Gretchen...otherwise known as the Cunt-Whore and Wretchen. Now as I know painfully well what its like to be an outcast, I wanted Michael C to get to fashion week so fucking badly...never before did I care so much.

Against all the nastiness & the assertions that he would be auf'd, he managed to get through each week of the show, until last night. Until the first part of the season finale. The last four, who consisted of Gretchen (grr), Andy (neutral), Mondo (the only one with actual talent) and Michael. They were told to show three pieces of their collection to determine who would be in the final three. And he lost. Even though his collection was far more elegant and expertly crafted then Gretchen's or Andy's. Not Mondo's though...its pretty much a given that he will win... And he had the single biggest meltdown of any auf'd contestant in the shows history. Usually the gay breakdowns are awesome to watch...this was just gut-wrenching and heart-breaking about how his family was going to take the news. I hardly was able to watch it.

Then I found this little article that basically was the death knell for me.
They had the last 10 designers on the show at Fashion Week...Why? Because the season ran into Fashion Week and the Producers didn't want the viewers to get Spoilers on who were the final three contestants. Which means Michael C's heartbreaking meltdown had to been staged. He SHOWED at Fashion Week...as did that evil evil evil evil evil cunt-whore Ivy. But I should have paid attention to what she said post-season "to all the haters -don't believe everything you see on television." So yeah. Fuck this show.

To be truthful I only continued to watch the show since it went to Lifetime because of Tim Gunn, because he is so awesome, & Michael Kors & Nina Garcia, because they are so brutal. Oh and Heidi Klum is always nice to look at. But during this season the judging has been often inexplicable. Even Tim Gunn said he had NO idea what drugs these judges were obviously on to explain why they judged the way they did.

Well I know the answer: The Producers wanted DRAMA. And not competition-based fashion drama, but the common denominator reality show drama of interpersonal conflicts. The show cared WAY more about the contestants' personality than their talent. And that's NOT why I watched this show. And this season has been so completely horrible to watch that not even Tim Gunn could save my interest in the show.

So Goodbye Project Runway. You should have stayed on the Bravo network.

SOHB'S OBLIGATORY TRANSFORMERS RELATED POST

HA! HA! I HAVE RETURNED!

I had to spend two miserable days marooned in the real world.

But I survived, readers--I survived!

Hopefully, my roommates will be a bit more vigilant about paying the Comcast bill from now on. At least until I can get my own computer--after that I could give a shit.

We spent most of those Internet-free 48 hours watching movies, which was cool--until I went out for coffee and came back to find a crime against humanity on the screen. Yes, friends--I had to watch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen yet again!

Now I know what side my bread is buttered on where my roomies are concerned: I live there free of rent or bills so I complain about next to nothing. Therefore, I kept my old friend "Buzzkill McSmartass" in check and didn't offer my snarky, though perfectly reasonable, commentary.

And yet, something like having to sit through ROTF cannot go unforgiven. Someone must pay in order for the universe to balance. So I thought this would be a good time to fulfill my Union obligations.

Oh, right! I forgot to tell you about the Union: The FNDGI (Federated Nerds, Dorks, and Geeks International). The Union requires all Nerd and/or Geek interest blogs, websites, and other digital media providers to meet a minimum requirement of Transformers and Star Wars content.

I was contacted recently and made aware of this statute. I was thus directed to meet this minimum requirement under threat of a full Nerd Audit--I don't know exactly what that entails, but I don't want to find out.

So--Transformers, then:

I'm not interested in doing a review--if you haven't seen it, then my review will be ueless since rather than a fair, reasonable, assessment, I'm more likely to write a profanity-laden tirade of pure geek hate.

If you have seen it, then you're most likely sick of reading Profanity-laden Tirades of Pure Geek Hate. I'll either tell you what you already know--or piss you off if you're one of the few fans that this film defies the laws of nature by having.

I would like to say one thing--and I'm skirting heresy with this, I know:

Transformers 1 wasn't that horrible.

Oh, by no means was it great, and the Animated film still kicks its ass six ways to Sunday--but it could have been much, much worse.

I honestly found it somewhat entertaining in a mindless, escapist sort of way.

In fact, it was the fact that Part 1 actually had some merit to it that made ROTF so heinous. It was like they made a film out of everything that was wrong with Transformers--and then added blatant racism and the most excruciating attempts at physical humor this side of a Police Academy movie.

As I said, there will be retribution for having to endure this film twice--and today, retribution is being served up by Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, and Mike Nelson. Yep, the geniuses of Rifftrax!

One of these days I'll have to buy the actual Rifftrack(if that's the appropriate singular form)for this film. Until then, we can all enjoy these "Best of" vids:

*sigh* I'm sorry--I didn't mean to get everyone's hopes up, but embedding's been disabled(fuckers)

Project Runway: Ivy still Sucks

Just when you think its safe for Michael C...Ivy RETURNS

Hello children. A confused and irritated Colleen here. I woke up for no reason 15 minutes ago and I decided to use this time to continue to ponder the conundrum of WHY THE FUCK PEOPLE KEEP TRASHING MICHAEL C?!?

We are down to the final six contestants: Gretchen the slightly less cunty, Mondo the Awesome, April the even slightly less cunty, Chris the sweetie, Andy the needs to take a chill, & my much maligned boy Mike C. Two weeks ago the Cunt Queen Ivy was knocked out of the competition. Last week Valerie was knocked out but she was nice and I was upset that she got kicked off. Anyway this episode is about making a mini-collection based off of Heidi Klum's active wear collection. Each contestant has to make three looks. A lot to do so the six were given help...the other eliminated contestants...sigh...Ivy...

Anyway, Michael C choses AJ, one of the few contestants who didn't constantly trash Mike. Ivy & Michael C and a few bystanders are in the sewing room and Ivy asks, seemingly innocuously, how Michael C is doing. Michael C says he's amazed he's still in the competition. And Ivy says "Why because you cheated?"

Apparently several episodes ago Ivy saw fashion tape wrappers in the bathroom. And apparently she and the other Michael haters assumed that he was using fashion tape to keep one of his pieces together...Why did she wait until NOW? Well most likely because she was eliminated and Michael C wasn't.

What pissed me off was that not only did NO ONE stick up for my boy, but a few were happy she did it...such as April, who I STILL don't get why she hates him. At least there is actual issues between Ivy & Mike. As far as I can tell, April has had no real prolonged contact with him. I don't get this Michael bashing. I read recaps of the episodes I missed and there really is NOTHING HE has done to earn this status. Anyway, Ivy then gloats about how she bashed Michael...And THEN Ivy goes up to Mondo and says "I think I made your friend cry." Cunt
I honestly don't know if Mondo replied to her because it almost immediately cuts to Mondo's private interview saying that there are a lot of bitter people in the work room today.

Oh here's my favorite: Ivy saying "I can at least die happy knowing that I said something. But Michael will get his...Karma...and in a moment that has earned my adoration for the editors of this show cuts to Ivy poking herself in the eye with a sewing needle (I think that's what it is_).

OH Tim Gunn addresses the issue and says that seeing as there is no evidence that they or the cameras could find and that it was so long ago, the subject is closed.

I didn't go into all the details about this but I just read a recent article interviewing Ivy...a total WTF moment.

Once when Michael C. won a challenge, he came backstage, announced that he’d won, and you muttered, “Of course you did” to him. Can you explain how you came to be that hostile with him?
It’s just funny too because the cameras aren’t always going to be on, and they’re not going to catch everything. It’s funny because Michael and I actually are friends now. But you’re put into a really messed-up situation and you’re under a lot of stress. We all thought that Mondo should’ve won that challenge. It’s nothing against Michael on a personal level, but what you don’t see is that Michael antagonized a lot of us while the cameras were off. So it led us to having a bad taste in our mouths. But I told him also it wasn’t fair for all of us to gang up on him and dislike him. It’s all the past now, we’re moving forward. He’s a very good guy and very talented.

Ok seriously, how has the cameras never caught Michael C antagonizing people? AND HOW DID THOSE TWO END UP FRIENDS? SHE MUST BE LYING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and to add to my displeasure, Michael C & Chris were on the bottom two...but Chris was knocked out...I would NEVER forgive Project Runway if they kicked out Michael in the episode they bring back Ivy who more or less uses the chance to get revenge on Michael C for still being in the competition when SHE IS SO MUCH BETTER (she does at one point say she and some of the other eliminated contestants should be there rather than Michael C).

Cunt. That's it. She is a cunt.

Ok, I'm going back to sleep now.

Smashy Review: Spider-Man 3

Hello! Hello, you sexy devils. I know I've been gone for a while, but I still love you all and if there's anybody I trust to run my empire, it's you guys. I thought I'd celebrate my comeback with another review, this time of a film significantly lower on the Badassometer than Scott Pilgrim. I speak of course, of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

Now, I don't want to jump on the bandwagon and rip this movie to shreds - ahh, hell, of course I do. THIS MOVIE SUCKS MAJOR ASS. As both a movie fan, a comic book fan and a human being I can safely say that this is one movie that actually distresses me, keeps me awake at night, because there are bad movies and then there are movies that COULD have been awesome but, for whatever reasons, aren't. Spider-Man 3 fits into this category perfectly.

First of all I will outline its good points. The fight scenes and special effects are, quite simply, spellbinding and the best I've seen in any comic book movie. The effects on Sandman and the symbiote are brilliant. The acting is, for the most part, good, especially from the man I believe is J Jonah Jameson incarnate: JK Simmons. The Spidey movies have always had great music, and this installment is no exception. And finally, it is extremely funny when it wants to be. Those are the good points. Now.... *clicks fingers* for the bad.

This movie is rife with plot holes. The first is Harry Osborn's transformation. Throughout these movies, the main continuous story arc has been the relationship between Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker. Harry starts as a troubled young man with a crush on MJ, an evil father and a superhero for a best friend. He then becomes a jackass alcoholic businessman, without a crush on Mary Jane, without an evil father and with a superhero for a best friend. By the beginning of the third, he is a supervillain without a crush on Mary Jane, without an evil father and with a superhero for an enemy. Seems plausible enough right? Well, barely ten minutes into the movie he hits his head and gets what I refer to as 'Conveniencenesia', losing all his memory. For the next hour or so he becomes 'old Harry', but instead of turning into the troubled young man with a crush on Mary Jane, he becomes this preposterously nice, goofy, happy character without a care in the world. Seriously, it's so weird. There's a scene when Mary Jane calls him up and he's in the middle of painting some kind of masterpiece. It's just a split second, but it confuses me to no end. Why did a bump on the head make him this way? I am reminded of the Futurama episode where Fry gets worms and becomes a charming, artistic hearthrob, except it makes far less sense than anything Matt Groening has ever dreamt up. Forgive me if I'm wrong about this, but I was under the impression that people who suffer from amnesia generally become depressed, scared and confused individuals, unable to remember key details from their lives, constantly forgetting and misunderstanding things that are common knowledge to their friends and family. But whatever, I'm sure Raimi and co did there homework.

It may well be down to the performance James Franco gives. He's a fine actor and a.... *sigh* a beautiful man, but somebody should have told him to tone it down a little. He's so damn happy, I don't think you seem him frown once during his 'Conveniencenesia' period. That's what's so wrong with this freaking movie, it's full of over the top performances. Ehhhh. Anyway, Harry touches a mirror or something and Willem Defoe's face ZOOOOOMS towards the screen, causing Harry to 'remember. Remember EVERYTHING!!!' He turns evil once again, but now of course he's a DIFFERENT kind of evil from earlier on, this time becoming a scheming, grinning, pie-eatin' pantomime villain rather than a brooding, revenge-seeking, neglected son. Then at the last minute he turns into a generic good guy again. Seriously, Harry Osborn goes through about one hundred different personalities in this trilogy. LET'S COUNT THEM SHALL WE

There's Troubled Harry from Spider-Man 1, then there's Angry Harry from Spider-Man 1, then there's Yuppie Harry from Spider-Man 2, then there's Alcoholic Harry from Spider-Man 2, then there's Vengeful Harry from Spider-Man 2, then there's Goblin Harry from Spider-Man 3, then there's Conveniencenesia Harry from Spider-Man 3, then there's Magnificent Bastard Harry from Spider-Man 3, and then finally 'Awwwwww' Harry from Spider-Man 3. What is that, 8 different Harrys over the course of three movies? Dayum. Look, I realise it's important for characters to develop over a trilogy's story arc, but by the end of it all Harry Osborn is several different people. Ughhh. Let's move on.

Sandman's entire character is completely fucking ridiculous. So we have an escaped burglar with 'bad luck' who has some kind of dying adorable child and a wife who lives in Elwood Blues' apartment 'in the presence of great truth' whatever the fuck that means. He falls into a giant sandpit (you know, the kind that are just lying around in fields with no safety rail or anything all over America) in which some scientists are testing the effects of sand when spun around real fast. They assume he's a bird (you know, one of the many man-shaped birds that occupy America) and start up the experiment. He turns into some.... some kind of.... SAND....MAAAANN!!!!!! but his little necklace thing manages to stay intact, despite being with him the entire time. I guess because it was in his pocket it stayed alright, but then there are scenes when he's floating around as a cloud guy and the necklace thing stays with him.... maybe it was floating with him, I don't know.

He wants to kill Spider-Man, because apparently he won't let Sandman take care of his sick daughter. Rather than, you know, explaining his situation to Spider-Man, a fellow superhuman, and asking for his help, he clumsily destroys a street in an attempted robbery. Smooth.

Now, I like Thomas Haden Church, I do. He seems like a nice guy, but the only movie I've ever liked him in was George of the Jungle, and this is no exception. His entire performance is so weird. He always looks kind of pained and frustrated, like his face is being stretched over his skull. There's a scene in which Spider-Man rips a water pipe apart, the camera zooming sharply in on Sandman's face with each screw that pops out of the pipe. The last time this happens Church sort of does a little face quirk, like he's thinking 'Daww, nuthin ever goes right for me! Guess I'm just a born loser. Here we go again!'. I know I'm shamelessly nitpicking, but I don't care, I'm fresh from watching the DVD and I have been living on Fruitella for the past five days and I feel my brain may be dissolving or something and I needed to get these thoughts off my chest. At the end of the movie, Sandman asks Spider-Man for forgiveness after pounding him into the ground seconds earlier, then floats away to a life of.... uhhh.... floating. His character sucks, and he was never a fantastic villain in the first place. Give me Vulture or Mysterio or Lizard next time, characters you can actually give depth and interest to. Some say without Venom this film would be great, but that's just not true. Sandman is only slightly better a character. Not to mention the fact that he is preposterously shoehorned into the franchise as Uncle Ben's 'real killer' in a pathetic attempt to give him a reason for even being in the fucking movie. EDIT: After watching the end, I find myself wildly cackling at the flashback of Uncle Ben's murder. Sandman just sort of raps on the window and helps the old man out of the car, politely asking if he can borrow the vehicle. He ponders whether or not he should proceed with the robbery and then accidently shoots Ben to death and gives a 'what have I DONE???!!!!' face. I lol'd.
Blleerrrghh, let's move on.

Venom, played by Topher Grace, is perhaps the worst and weirdest fictional antagonist I've ever come across in all my life. A meteorite falls from the sky with no explanation or reason and splurges out a black liquid (the symbiote), which attaches itself to Peter Parker's scooter and lives with him unnoticed for a while. When he's at his lowest, it crawls all over his costume and turns him into Black Suit Spider-Man. Even though later, he's got the black suit and the regular suit seperately in a cupboard, even though the black suit IS the regular suit, just covered with the symbiote, because we see it envelop the regular suit earlier on, except then the symbiote comes off and Spider-Man is completely naked underneath.... um. Anyway. Spider-Man gets rid of the symbiote (after some bizarre dancing, which is not so much funny or rage-inducing as it is baffling) and it plops down onto Eddie Brock's face. Yes, that's right, Spider-Man's parasitic liquid drips onto Eddie Brock's gazing face as Spidey writhes naked above. In a church. Abraxas, feel free to make of this what you will.

Eddie Brock is not evil or crazy, he's just an annoying douche who, for reasons unknown, wants Peter Parker's job. Or IS he meant to be crazy? There are certainly signs of this. He frequently makes weird comments about Gwen, first saying they are dating and later claiming he plans to propose despite them only ever having coffee. He has a complete breakdown after being fired from a job he didn't even have yet and asks GOD to kill someone he screwed over in the first place. However, these don't strike me as the actions of an insane supervillain, more the actions of a complete fuckwit. AAAAAAnyway, Spider-Man's black suit/symbiote/sperm envelops Brock and he turns into Venom, who somehow knows everything about Sandman and Peter and gets Sandman to team up with him in a grand plan to..... humiliate Spider-Man. Not murder or destroy, just humiliate.

Yeah.

Anyway, he is only ever Venom for about five seconds at a time, because every time we get a glimpse of him his spookyface peels back to reveal the oddly fanged Topher Grace (who, once again, is naked under the suit despite being fully clothed when he transformed. Weird) in all his not-at-all-threatening glory. He is incredibly easily defeated by Spider-Man banging poles together around him and making him bug out. He then explodes or something, I don't know (I stopped watching because Hot Fuzz had started on ITV 1 and is the far superior flick). So, that's Venom.

The worst part of this movie is the character of Harry's loyal butler, 'Bernard', who has had about three off screen lines throughout the trilogy until now. He pops up persuading Two-Face - I mean, Harry to turn good again by telling him his father died by his own hand. Gee, Bernard is a great guy. Not only was he fully aware that BOTH the Osborns were murderers and madmen, but he could have saved Harry countless times by telling him how his father died at ANY point in the last few years. Is he fucking CRAZY?! What the HELL were they thinking?! Why didn't they just have GOD appear from the heavens before Harry and tell him what happened? That would have angered me less. This is the worst fucking deus ex machina I have ever seen, and I am shaking with rage as I type this. Good God. Fuckadoodle doo. CuntburgerfucktwatterlycumquatfuckbraintrollsuckingarsewipeANAL JIZZ CLOWNS! WHY THE FUCK DO I BOTHER???!!! THEY COULD HAVE ENDED THIS FUCKING STORY TWO MOVIES AGO! WHY WOULD BERNARD WAIT TILL NOW TO TELL HARRY?!! WHY WOULDN'T HE TELL EVERYBODY STRAIGHT AFTER HE FOUND OUT! WHAT POSSIBLY REASON COULD HE HAVE HAD FOR KEEPING SHTUM? IS HE A FUCKING ASS?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Somebody, please tell me! Tell me how I fix this! How do I calm down! HOW?! HOOOOOOWWWW

This is THE DOCTOR, signing out, deeply sorry for the nonsensical bullshit posing as a movie review, incredibly glad to be back and FUCKING angry about the shitfest that is Spider-Man 3. I am truly apologetic for the above article's shittiness. Goodnight. Now WHERE THE FUCK IS MY FRUITELLA?!

YOU ALL SUCK AND I HATE YOU

I missed boobs?! Seriously, I missed EVERYBODY'S boobs?!! Because my LAPTOP WAS OUT OF POWER?!?!?!?!
Since Scooter will never let me forget this, I will be publicly executing him at dusk. And not the nice kind of execution where everybody's kinda sad that it's come to this and stuff. The BAD kind where people are throwing fruit and punching pinata versions of the prisoner.

I missed boobs....

Project Runway: Ivy Sucks

I want one of the designers on Project Runway... actually there's two, fucking Gretchen... to be kicked off the show.

Asian designer named Ivy is a cunt who needs to be destroyed. She thinks nothing of throwing someone under the bus to save her own hide and, while has excellent technical skills, I doubt her creativity...As do Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, & the delectable Heidi Klum.

On happier news, Michael C. was not the punching bag of this week's episode. Michael D. was. Tonight the designers were paired up and told that each would be making the other's design. Resort wear. Mondo of the WTF is wrong with his hair was paired with my boy Michael C. Everyone thinks Michael C is the worst designer...though he has won 2 rounds thus far. Mondo thinks the same of Michael C. at first. Then he sees that Michael C is actually awesome and they bond. Still WTF is with his hair???
Seriously, what is that?

Ivy decided to dumb down her design because she didn't trust Michael D...whose design that Ivy constructed was on the Top...to properly make her design. Go fuck yourself bitch.
Die Bitch Die!!!!!!

She & Casanova (who made an outfit decidedly not resort like and yes that's actually his name) were on the bottom. Casanova was outed. But Casanova took full responsibility, while Ivy tried to shove blame onto Michael D. Fuck her...fuck her hard. So the entertainingly incomprehensible Casanova is gone and the bitch remains.

Here's my favorite dude, because I know what its like to be picked on. So I want this guy to make it to Bryant Park fashion week in NYC.
GO MIKE C. GO!!!

Thanks for your kind attention.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Jedisilk!

Why Everything Is Bullshit (or, The World According To Smashy)

This is my first post, and after Colleen and Braxy's quite excellent attempts, I am feeling intensely nervous. You can tell, can't you?! The topic I have chosen to discuss (or rather, yell at you all about) is the first in a series I call Why Everything Is Bullshit (I have no plans to continue this series. I just liked the idea), and will be about the surge of what I call Buzzword Comics - namely, any comics, TV shows or films that include the words 'Dark', 'Gritty', 'Realistic' or any variations of those Big Three in their premise.
The main subject is Batman. The general opinion is that Batman is a lot 'darker' (at this point you may like to begin the Buzzword Drinking Game, in which you must drink a Smashy Spritzer every time any of the Big Three are mentioned in this article) than other heroes in the world of superhero comics. I mean, he wears black, all his villains have plausible motivations and gimmicks, and he basically lives in a city that's so dark it's like a Tim Burton wet dream, where the sun almost never shines and the streets are composed entirely of shadowy alleyways. So, he's pretty 'dark' and 'realistic' and 'gritty', right?
Well, ha, no. At its prime (referred to as the Silver Age of comic books), the DC universe was as campy, outlandish and fucking spectacular as Marvel is (or was, but we'll get to that). I mean, this was a time when KITE MAN was a tougher than the Joker.
Batman was awesome back then. Who needs a growly Christian Bale voice or a perpetually angry old Frank Miller jerk when you've got a Batman that bitch slaps his own apprentice when he talks back and dresses like a FUCKING mirror just to outsmart an enemy. Goddamn he was cool. Who needs a deadpan, eye-stabbing Heath Ledger or a 'super-sane' transvestite Grant Morrisson.... thing when you have a gleeful Joker who threatens to turn all of Gotham's water to jelly. Jelly. Just think how many problems that would cause. More than raping some henchman's wife to spite him (all these things I mention have happened, btw). The Silver Age was like, WOAH.
Frank Miller (a writer I'm sure you've all heard of, who, like M Night Shymalan and Tim Burton since, has got worse with each piece of work) once wrote a book called The Dark Knight Returns. People loved its gritty, dark and pissed-off take on what could be the future of the Batman world. It was shocking and wonderful because it demonstrated a world in which Batman had retired, and quite simply, everything had gone tits-up. Weird monster gangs ruled the streets, all the supervillains and heroes have retired or been killed, and the worlds' finest (a certain Mr Kent) was now a mere pawn of the US Government. Times were hard. That GN worked so well because when The Dark Knight actually did return, you felt it. Miller took time to introduce the future Gotham and shock us with it - the scenes of rape and violence (comitted mostly by teenage gangs) aren't as gratuitous as they seem. They just add to the feeling of 'FUCK YEAH!' when Batman comes to fix his city.
But a lot of writers didn't see this when they read it. All they saw was 'OOH RAPE! KIDS AS CRIMNALS, BELOVED SUPERHEROES DECONSTRUCTED, BELOVED SUPERVILLAINS KILLING THEMSELVES - THIS IS MY KINDA SHIT!' For the next few years, almost all comic books followed this tradition (Batman: A Serious House on Serious Earth is perhaps the best example of this), and pretty soon people began to try so hard to be like Alan Moore and Frank Miller that comics became campy once again. Rob Liefeld and many of Miller's more recent works are a good example. However, recent years have shown that the time of dark, gritty, realistic comics are far from over.
The much-praised Christopher Nolan Batmovies are a perfect example of people not quite understanding it.
Now please, don't get me wrong - one of the great things about comics is that anyone can interpret them however they want, but it's the writers and artists that take this idea and completely screw up by making comics that aren't fun, orginal or even interesting for the readers.
Anyway, the 'Nolanverse', as fans have dubbed it. Many, many people view it as the greatest ever incarnation of Batman and his world, but that is simply not true. The Nolan films are less 'brillaint Batman films' than they are 'brilliant films that include Batman'. The Dark Knight is not a great Batman story, it is a great story featuring Batman. Heath Ledger's performance is not a fantastic portrayal of the Joker, it is just fantastic. But no, pretentious assholes who have never read a single Batman comic ignorantly label themselves as Batman fans simply because they like to dress up as the Joker on Halloween or write 'Nolanised' fan fiction, then post their crappy DeviantArt illustrations online. They don't understand and love these characters the same way Paul Dini and the Nolan brothers (to an EXTENT) do. They call the classic Penguin character 'lame' and 'not special', and prefer the current 'realistic' interpretation of him simply being an ugly and cowardly club owner who provides Batman with information, rather than the colourful, rich jerkass who had the class of Joker, the gadgets of Batman and the complete obnoxiousness of the Riddler. It's insulting, and an example of writers too lazy to stay true to the character. It's like if they made a Star Trek movie in which Spock was a young, blonde action hero with no Vulcan ears, no fringe and no crazy eyebrows because the original depiction was 'too boring' or 'too unrealistic'. Fuck that, I want my Penguin back.
The Brian Azzarello GN Joker was released fairly recently, to rave reviews. It has been called the best depiction of the Joker since Killing Joke, and when I heard Lee Bermejo was pencilling I was ecstatic (check his stuff out, it's amazing). Then I saw the first image, of an extremely Ledger-like (the book was finished before TDK was released, but their similarities back up my point that the 'realism' dominating modern comics is unoriginal and is producing the same results every time) Joker striding out of Arkham Asylum and giving it the finger with the look of a teenager sent to his room, I knew this was going to suck ultimate.
The Joker in this comic book is NOTHING. He's a bullying gangster who speaks in slang, kills for no reason, rapes women, robs banks and pops pills. You may as well have called him Evil McDoesNoGood and it would have made him only slightly more cliche. The entire book is full of terrible interpretations of Batcharacters such as Two-Face, Riddler, Penguin, Killer Croc and the beloved Harley Quinn. Two-Face is a sort of expressionless, brooding, upper-class criminal who sits in a chair half the time. Riddler is a hustler with tattoos and a pimped-out car. Penguin is the bumbling coward I have already mentioned. Killer Croc is a token black guy with bumpy skin. Harley Quinn is a mute stripper. What the fuck is this? Reading this GN, I get the impression that Brian wrote an incredibly generic gangster story and thought 'Well, this sucks. How can I make money out of this....' He stared around his office and noticed a kid playing outside the window with some Batman figurines. 'THAT'S IT!' he cried. 'I'll tweak the characters a little, rename the city to Gotham and mass produce this shit!' He then laughed evilly and preceded to beat up the kid and rape a few kittens.
Anyway, the entire graphic novel is just terrible. The Joker is a swaggering bully who commits petty crimes and Batman is a kind of presence watching him the whole time (now this idea I did like, but it was not used particularly well), who lets him murder a bunch of people because they're criminals.... or something? Because apparently the Gotham Police Force is completely nonexistent in the world Azzarello has created.
The problem with a realistic Batman world is that it isn't quite possible. Saying all of Batman's villains are realistic and 'could happen' is like saying that it's a good idea to burn Qur'ans.

Oh.

Anyway, CONTROVERSY aside, there are tons of Batvillains who are completely comic-booky and would be BORING if you made them realistic. Poison Ivy. Clayface. Bane. Killer Croc. Loads of the greats. If you create a Batman world in which some of Batman's best characters won't work, you have created a pretty shitty Batman world.
If you want to do something new with Batman, create a comic that is the OPPOSITE of Joker. Less rapes, more pie-throwing. Less club-owning mobster 'Abner', more umbrella-gun wielding, top hat wearing, cummerbund sporting supervillain.
For all his faults, Grant Morrisson recently came up with a phrase that perfectly describes comic books: 'Popcrime'. Murder, burglary and all-out crime comitted not because someone's daddy once cut a smile in his face, but because it's part of the game. Criminals do it for fun, and most of them (particularly the Joker) are gleefully aware that they are ridiculous. Arguably, the 1960s Batman show is the most 'realistic' Batman of all time. Every character is completely insane. The Bruce Wayne of the Nolan films is an extremely realistic character, which is why it's so dumb that he is secretly Batman. If Batman existed, he would most definitely be as batshit insane (pun most definitely intended) as the Adam West version is. ARGHHHHHHHHH EVERYTHING IS BULLSHIT

It is pretty late, and if any of you stopped reading half an hour ago, I don't blame you. All of the above is most likely incorrect, nonsensical crap, so I apologise. This was mostly a test article, as I felt like I should take advantage of my position as contributor before all of you have written a bunch of masterpieces and I'm still trying to find a decent Mad Men torrent.
Also, does anyone know how to put more than one picture in these things? The Kite Man one worked fine, but none of the others are appearing.

Thanks for reading and so on! Hope it was worth it.

PREJUDICE

Relax, this won't be as heavy as it sounds.

I've been a geek my whole life--and I've received every disparaging comment one might expect as a result. But it was always about people making fun of me. I never considered such hatred as an insult to "my people" or "my community". That is--until last night:

This is Entourage, and while definitely not the nerdiest of programs, it's one of my favorite shows--and despite what I'm about to relate here, it remains one of my favorite shows(though, granted, I've only seen up to season 5).

So last night I'm watching an old rerun on Spike TV from season 2. Vince(for the uninitiated, Vincent Chase is an up and coming young star, and the show deals with him and his childhood friends as they try to make it in Hollywood) has just landed the lead in the new Aquaman movie, so the studio sent him to San Diego Comic-Con to promote the film--and to meet with a popular internet jornalist whose fansite has the power to make or break a movie like this.

Folks, I saw this episode a few years ago and thought nothing of it. However, since then my time online, both here and on sites like(of course)Topless Robot, has given me a sense of belonging, a feeling of community and fellowship with my brother and sister geeks. And from this new perspective, this innocent episode took on some disturbing and sinister overtones.

I think I'm beginning to understand how American Indians must have felt when watching old cowboy movies, or, to be more contemporary, how Italians feel about Mafia films(or worse, Jersey Shore). I'm not claiming to truly understand the pain of bigotry--but I can sympathize with the idea of watching a depiction of others like myself and thinking: "But that's not who we are!"

Every geek shown at the Con was one variety or another of obnoxious or pathetic, and most were markedly unattractive. The few characters we met who were there to sign autographs and meet fans were varying levels of scornful, condescending, and exploitive.

Understand, there are a LOT of people in our community who deserve every derisive comment and slur one can hurl. No one knows this better than we do--point of fact, we're usually the ones leading the charge against such individuals as they make the rest of us look bad. But would it have killed them to include one or two remotely cool geeks? Hell, a hot cosplayer or two would've helped(and given the nature of Entourage, I'm rather stunned that they didn't take advantage of this opportunity--for fuck's sake they had Furries in season 4!)

And then there's the interview with the web journalist, and before I launch into another diatribe I've gotta point something out: Before the interview started, Vince was given a packet of background information on Aquaman by his publicist, so when the interview started he could appear to know the ins and outs of the character, the comic, the artists who drew him, and so forth. What distresses me is Vince did such a good job of impersonating an actual Aquaman fan that if TR existed in the Entourage universe, we probably would've stuck him in one of the Nerdiest Celebrities lists. I know it's just a show, but the very idea leads one to question the true nerdiness of anyone who has something to gain by appearing geek-friendly.

The Journalist was the real prize--observe:

That's Rainn Wilson, who some of you may know from "The Office". First, I'm willing to overlook the pains the costume and hair people went to to give him the most stereotypically dorky look possible. The character he plays, RJ Spencer, runs a website that gets over a million hits a day. Studios bow and scrape before him in hopes that he'll give their movies his approval. In his case, it's not his appearance or his geekiness that makes him offensive, but rather his complete lack of integrity. Vince cut their interview short when Spencer began asking some unpleasant personal questions. Spencer responded by promising to trash the movie on his site, later offered to reverse his position for $350,000 in cash, and finally agreed to write a glowing endorsement after Vince's boys hooked him up with some porn stars who were at the Con promoting their own comic book.

Moral of the Story: Run of the mill Geeks are pitiful, sad, and mildly grotesque. Geeks with power are unscrupulous douchebags who'd sell their mothers for cash or pussy.

As I stated before, Entourage was and still is one of my favorite shows, and I suppose you can't really blame them for falling in line with the poular conception of my people(yes, MY PEOPLE. That's where I'm at with this shit). After all, they have to play to their audience, which--apparently--doesn't include nearly enough geeks for us to get a fair shake.

What's truly important here is what I learned about the nature of stereotypes and slurs. Insult me all you want--I'm used to it.

Insult my peeps--and we got ourselves a problem.
